What to check before choosing a broker in Poland
Poland has one of the most active retail investment markets in Central and Eastern Europe, driven in part by XTB — a Polish company and one of Europe's largest retail brokers by client count. The Warsaw Stock Exchange (Giełda Papierów Wartościowych, GPW) is a significant emerging market exchange with over 400 listed companies.
1. Regulation: KNF and MiFID II. Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego (KNF) is Poland's financial regulator. Poland is a full EU member — MiFID II passporting applies in full. XTB was founded and is headquartered in Warsaw, with KNF as its home regulator. Verify at knf.gov.pl.
2. CGT: 19% flat Belka tax. Poland applies a flat 19% capital gains tax informally known as the podatek Belki (Belka tax, named after Finance Minister Marek Belka who introduced it in 2002). The 19% rate applies to all investment income: share gains, dividends, interest, and fund income. There is no annual exemption. Capital losses can be offset in the same year and carried forward for 5 years. Polish brokers automatically withhold (pobierają) the Belka tax on domestic accounts.
3. IKE and IKZE — Poland's pension saving accounts. Poland has two important voluntary pension saving accounts. IKE (Indywidualne Konto Emerytalne) — gains held to retirement (age 65+) are exempt from the 19% Belka tax entirely. IKZE (Indywidualne Konto Zabezpieczenia Emerytalnego) — annual contributions are tax-deductible (up to ~PLN 9,388 for 2026); gains taxed at only 10% flat upon withdrawal. Both are available through XTB, mBank Brokerage, DM BOŚ and other Polish providers. EU brokers (DEGIRO, IBKR) do NOT offer IKE/IKZE.
4. Currency: Polish zloty (PLN). Poland uses the PLN — it is not a Eurozone member. XTB and mBank offer PLN-native accounts with no FX costs for Polish equities. DEGIRO and Interactive Brokers are EUR/USD-based — PLN deposits require conversion at standard bank FX rates.
5. Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) — the largest exchange in CEE. The GPW WIG20 index includes PKN Orlen (PKN), PKO Bank (PKO), Allegro (ALE), KGHM (KGH), Santander Bank Polska (SPL), CD Projekt (CDR). XTB and mBank offer best access to GPW-listed instruments.

How to Get Started with a Broker in Poland
1
Consider IKE for long-term investing — no Belka tax on gains
The IKE (Indywidualne Konto Emerytalne) is the most powerful tax advantage available to Polish investors. Gains held until retirement (age 65+) are completely exempt from the 19% Belka tax. There is no annual contribution limit for capital gains within IKE — you only pay tax if you withdraw early. XTB and mBank both offer IKE accounts.
2
Use IKZE for tax-deductible contributions
IKZE contributions are deductible from taxable income annually (up to ~PLN 9,388 for 2026 for employees). At withdrawal (after age 65+), gains are taxed at a flat 10% instead of 19%. For high earners in the 32% income tax bracket, the IKZE deduction is particularly valuable.
3
Verify regulation at KNF
Always verify your broker's registration at knf.gov.pl. Polish law requires any broker serving Polish residents to be KNF-registered or hold a valid MiFID II passport. XTB (KNF), mBank (KNF), DM BOŚ (KNF) are all Polish. DEGIRO (AFM) and IBKR (CSSF) hold valid EU passports.
4
Declare foreign broker gains in PIT-38
Polish brokers (XTB, mBank, DM BOŚ) automatically withhold Belka tax and issue PIT-8C annual summaries. For foreign brokers (DEGIRO, Interactive Brokers), you must complete the PIT-38 annual tax declaration yourself, reporting all capital gains, dividends and losses. The deadline is 30 April each year. Keep annual broker reports (tax statements) for all foreign accounts.
🇵🇱 Poland: Country Environment Blueprint
EU / MiFID II
✅ Full EU member. MiFID II passporting applies — EU/EEA-regulated brokers can serve Polish residents. UK FCA-only brokers are NOT valid post-Brexit.
Investor Protection
€22,000 (~PLN 100,000) per investor under the Polish Investor Compensation System (System Rekompensat). Bank deposits: up to €100,000 under the Bank Guarantee Fund (Bankowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny).
Capital Gains (Belka tax)
Flat 19% on all capital income (podatek od zysków kapitałowych / podatek Belki). No annual CGT exemption. Applies to shares, ETFs, dividends, interest, and fund income. Capital losses can be offset in the same year and carried forward for 5 years.
IKE (Individual Retirement Account)
0% Belka tax on gains Gains held in IKE to retirement age (65+ for men, 60+ for women) are completely exempt from the 19% Belka tax. Early withdrawals are subject to standard Belka tax. Annual contribution limit: PLN 23,472 (2026). Available through Polish brokers (XTB, mBank, DM BOŚ).
IKZE (Individual Retirement Security Account)
Tax-deductible contributions Annual contributions (up to ~PLN 9,388 for 2026) are deductible from PIT taxable income. Gains withdrawn at retirement taxed at flat 10% (vs 19%). For high earners (32% bracket), IKZE provides immediate tax relief plus reduced exit rate.
Dividend Tax
Dividends from Polish companies: 19% withholding tax (ryczałtowy podatek) withheld at source by the paying company. Foreign dividends: 19% Belka tax applies; foreign WHT may be credited under tax treaty (UPO). Declare foreign dividends in PIT-38.
US ETF Access (PRIIPs)
⚠️ Poland is an EU member — PRIIPs applies. US-domiciled ETFs restricted for retail investors. Use UCITS-compliant equivalents. XTB, DEGIRO, and mBank all offer broad UCITS ETF selections.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Belka tax in Poland? +
The Belka tax (podatek Belki) is the informal name for Poland's 19% flat capital gains tax on investment income, introduced in 2002 by Finance Minister Marek Belka. It applies to all capital income: share gains, dividends, fund returns, and interest. Polish brokers (XTB, mBank, DM BOŚ) automatically withhold the tax and issue a PIT-8C summary. For foreign brokers (DEGIRO, Interactive Brokers), you must declare income manually in the annual PIT-38 return.
What are IKE and IKZE and how do they help? +
IKE (Indywidualne Konto Emerytalne) and IKZE (Indywidualne Konto Zabezpieczenia Emerytalnego) are Poland's voluntary pension saving accounts. IKE gives you complete Belka tax exemption on gains if you hold until retirement (age 65+) — saving the full 19%. IKZE contributions are tax-deductible annually (up to ~PLN 9,388 for 2026), and gains are taxed at only 10% flat upon retirement withdrawal instead of 19%. Both are available through XTB, mBank, and other Polish KNF-regulated providers. EU brokers (DEGIRO, IBKR) do NOT offer Polish IKE/IKZE accounts.
Is XTB really a Polish company? +
Yes. XTB (X-Trade Brokers DM SA) is a Polish company founded in Warsaw in 2002 and listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW). Its primary regulator is KNF (Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego). XTB subsequently received additional licences from the FCA (UK) and CySEC (Cyprus) to serve other markets. For Polish investors, the KNF-regulated Polish entity is most relevant and offers PLN-native accounts, IKE, and direct GPW access.
Can I use DEGIRO or Interactive Brokers from Poland? +
Yes. Both DEGIRO (AFM, Netherlands) and Interactive Brokers (CSSF, Luxembourg) hold valid MiFID II passports and can legally serve Polish residents. However, they do not offer Polish IKE or IKZE accounts, and they do not automatically report to Polish tax authorities. You must declare all capital gains, dividends, and losses from these brokers manually in your annual PIT-38. DEGIRO issues annual tax statements for this purpose; IBKR provides detailed activity reports.
